Help Tempe customers find the right product care guide

Match care instructions to the right product, make them readable on a phone and keep them available after purchase. A guide for Tempe store owners.

A customer bought a cushion months ago. Now they want to clean it, but the product page only describes the color and dimensions. The label is hard to read, and the shop’s general FAQ does not identify their fabric.

Useful care information starts with the exact product. A clear website should help customers find the right instructions without guessing which guide applies.

For a Tempe shop selling homewares, clothing or other products that need ongoing care, start with one product family. Review the source information, the public page and the route an existing buyer would use to return to it.

Match the guide to the product

Gather the approved instructions from the manufacturer, supplier or person responsible for the product. Keep the source and its date with your internal record.

Imagine a Tempe shop selling cushion covers from two suppliers. They look similar in a collection photograph, but their materials differ. A shared “Cushion care” paragraph should not be assumed to cover both.

Record the product name, model and any finish or material that changes the instructions. If the source is unclear, ask the supplier before publishing. Do not fill a gap with advice copied from a similar item.

Keep product identification visible on the guide itself. Someone arriving from a saved link needs to know what it covers without first returning to the shop catalog.

When different options need different information, check the exact combination. Our product-variant guide covers keeping those choices and product records consistent.

Store the instructions where editors can maintain them

Avoid pasting the same paragraph into several unrelated places without recording where it appears. A later correction can leave one version behind.

Shopify uses metafields to store additional product information. Its documentation specifically includes care instructions, with different values assigned to individual products. Read Shopify’s metafield overview (new tab).

In ordinary terms, this gives your team a named field for the information rather than another paragraph hidden inside a long description. Decide who can edit it and who confirms that the content matches the product.

Shopify’s care-guide tutorial separates three tasks: defining the field, adding each product’s instructions and connecting the field to the storefront. Its example uses a collapsible row on the product template. Review Shopify’s care-guide tutorial (new tab).

Adding text in the admin does not complete the customer-facing review. Open the actual page after saving. Check a product with instructions, one with different instructions and one without a value.

Our editable-website guide explains how to give staff clear boundaries for routine changes. Include the care field and its approval source in those handover notes.

Make the guide easy to read beside the product

Use a direct label such as “Care instructions.” Keep the opening text specific enough to identify the item or material. Avoid a vague link called “More information” when customers need a particular answer.

Organize longer instructions under meaningful headings. W3C explains that headings communicate the page’s organization and can support navigation through assistive technology. Read W3C’s heading guidance (new tab).

Prefer readable text for the instructions. A photograph can show a relevant product detail, but customers should not have to zoom into a picture of a label to read the only available copy.

If you include a manufacturer’s document, name the product and file clearly beside the link. Keep the essential route understandable on a phone. Check the document itself rather than assuming a working download means the content is readable.

Shopify’s display guidance says theme support determines which metafields can be connected through supported sections or blocks. Have your maintainer confirm the setup instead of assuming every theme provides the same presentation. Read Shopify’s storefront guidance (new tab).

Check any collapsible section with a keyboard and enlarged text. The title, instructions and help link should remain readable when the section is open.

Give existing buyers a route back

A product page can help someone before purchase, but a returning buyer may start from an old email, packaging or a saved link. List the routes your business actually provides.

For the imagined cushion shop, a care page linked from the product and the store’s help area could serve both shoppers and existing owners. Keep the destination recognizable by product name or model.

If you add a link to packaging, open it on a phone before printing. A QR code needs a maintained destination just like a typed address. Our printed QR guide covers that longer-lived link.

Several starting points, one maintained guide
  • Product page
  • Store help area
  • Packaging link
Product-specific care guideIdentify the item, explain the instructions, offer help.

Consider what happens when the product is no longer sold. If its sales page will disappear, preserve a useful care destination for earlier buyers. Do not redirect them to a newer product whose instructions may differ.

Make the support route clear when a customer cannot identify their item. Ask for the information your team needs, such as a product name, model or order reference, through the store’s established contact process.

Check updates against earlier products

A supplier may revise instructions or change a material while keeping a familiar product name. Confirm which products or versions the new information covers before replacing the public copy.

Keep a brief change record: what changed, which items it applies to, the source and who checked it. Preserve earlier guidance where it is still needed for earlier products.

Do not turn an ordinary care page into a blanket answer for returns or other purchase questions. Keep those routes distinct. Our return-request guide explains how to make that separate process clear.

Ask the person answering customer questions to review the guide too. Repeated questions can reveal missing identification or wording that makes sense internally but leaves customers unsure.

Test the route as a returning customer

Choose a product with a guide and follow the public links while signed out. Repeat on a narrow phone and desktop. Confirm the guide identifies the right item and the help route works.

Then check a product with no guide, a product with different instructions and an older item that is no longer featured. Watch for empty headings, the wrong shared text or a link that opens an unrelated product.

If you offer a printable version, check that the product name and instructions survive printing. Our website-printing guide covers page breaks and useful offline context.

Give someone responsibility for this review after product, supplier or theme changes. Keep the checked links and any unresolved questions together so the next editor can repeat it.

A little more clarity

Common questions.

Ask a different question
Can Shopify show different care instructions for different products?
Yes. Shopify documents a product care-guide metafield with values assigned to individual products and connected to a theme block. Check your theme support and the actual customer-facing result.
Should every product use the same care guide?
Only when the approved instructions apply to all of them. Confirm the material, finish, model and supplier guidance before sharing a guide across products.
What happens to care information when a product is discontinued?
Keep a working route for existing buyers. Preserve the relevant guide separately if the sales page is removed, and check old links before directing customers to a replacement.
